Two People in Hospital After Crash in Salt Lake City

Early on Sunday morning, October 4, two people were sent to hospital after a crash in Salt Lake City.

According to the Utah Highway Patrol, the accident happened shortly before 2.30 a.m. in Salt Lake City on the Interstate 15 around 600 North. A Red Ford Ranger being driven by 27 year old Steven Colgate of Cottonwood Heights left the travel lane having drifted over and went into a gore area of the off ramp. It then hit a crash attenuator at the end of the concrete barrier. Colgate was taken to hospital in what is said to be fair condition and his passenger, 20 year old Callie Jones of St. George was also taken to hospital.

Following the police investigation of the crash, Colgate was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol. Police went on to say that the injuries could have been much worse as the driver was not wearing a seat belt and they reminded all drivers not to drive while intoxicated and that they should always wear their seat belts.

Strong Winds Cause Dust Storms in Utah

On Tuesday April 14 there were strong winds which picked up dust from the desert creating very dangerous conditions on the roads in Utah.

Outside of Salt Lake City in western Utah, visibility was only quarter mile with the winds and the dust clouds resulting in drivers barely being able to see to drive. There were numerous accidents on Interstate 80 and at one stage lanes on both sides were closed from the Utah-Nevada state line to mile marker 99 near Tooele. According to the Utah Highway Patrol, one of the major accidents involved six semi trucks and 11 cars resulting in eighteen people with a variety of injuries being taken to hospital.

Sometimes the gusts of wind were so strong that semi trucks were blown over and windows blown in.

In addition, the air quality plummeted causing problems to those with respiratory problems. Adding to the problems with the air quality and lack of visibility on the roads, a wild fire around 200 miles south of the city in the Quakie Haven area of Fishlake burned out of control and the high winds caused it to spread rapidly covering around 200 acres. Highway 25 was closed and homes were evacuated.

120 Mile and Hour Chase Leaves Two Suspects Dead, One Home Destroyed by Fire

The chase started at the Tuscan, a restaurant in Price, Utah, after authorities responded to a complaint about a fight at about 1:00am on October 24. It ended when the suspects crashed into a Helper area home which burst into flames and is believed by officers to be burnt to the point that it is unrecoverable. Thankfully the home was unoccupied at the time of the crash. But there are more questions than answers as authorities try to identify the suspects and figure out why they ran in the first place.

Officers never really made contact with the suspects before the chase began. When a Carbon County deputy arrived at the restaurant where the disturbance was reported, he saw a car leaving the parking lot. According to the sheriff, the deputy got out of his vehicle and ordered the driver to stop, to no avail. He was nearly struck as the suspects fled the scene.

A few minutes later a Helper police officer clocked a matching vehicle speeding by at 120mph. The Helper officer and the deputy gave chase, but lost sight of the vehicle. When they noticed dust on a side road they decided to turn back and investigate. They discovered that the suspect vehicle had launched into a house and both the vehicle and the home has burst into flames.

After Helper and Price fire departments put out the fire, two bodies were found in the car and the house was nothing but a burnt out shell.

Choosing the Safest Vehicle for Your Teen Driver

Most states allow teenagers to begin driving on their own between the ages of 16 and 18. For decades the most dangerous time in any driver’s driving career has been those few years when they first got behind the wheel and began learning to drive. Teen drivers face all manner of distractions including lack of familiarity with how to handle certain driving conditions, typical teen inabilities to focus and pay attention, and friends roughhousing and playing in the car.

Because teenagers are far more likely than every other age group to become involved in a serious automobile accident, parents have long wondered what they can do to help increase their teen’s chances of avoiding such accidents, or walking away unhurt in the case they should be involved in a serious car crash. One of the best things parents can do is to give their teen driver the very best vehicle possible, as a vehicle which handles better and is better able to withstand a serious car accident will, on average, ensure that the teen driver fares as well as possible in such a dangerous situation.

Here we present a video from a safety expert which gives you some tips to consider when deciding on a car for your teen driver.

3 Teens Killed in Tragic Salt Lake City Car Crash

Salt Lake City residents are grieving after a one car crash killed three people last Saturday.

According to the Utah Highway Patrol, three teenage passengers were killed in a car accident on Interstate 80 last Saturday, while the driver of the car was seriously injured. According to police reports the 23 year-old driver was in the parking lot of the Salt Lake International Airport at about 5:00 AM on Saturday morning, when police attempted to perform a traffic stop. The driver fled from police, who initially chased a car, but reportedly called off the chase before the crash.

Police believe that the driver was going close to 100 miles per hour when it appears that he made a last second decision to turn on to I-215, causing the car to roll. Police are still unsure why the driver chose to flee.

The investigation into the crash is still ongoing. But the initial reports indicate that one of the passengers was the driver’s girlfriend.

Salt Lake City Woman Killed in Construction Site Auto Accident

Driving in construction zones can be very perilous as a result of the reduced speeds, uneven roadways, and obstructions in the road. When driving on Salt Lake City streets we always recommend that construction zones be treated with particular caution. The city was recently reminded of the dangers of riding through construction zones when a local woman was killed in a construction zone accident in South Salt Lake.

According to Police Lt. Gary Keller, a 31 year-old Salt Lake City woman was killed when the Chevy Malibu in which she was traveling collided with a Dodge Durango, partially ejecting the woman from the car, causing it to roll over. The Malibu was traveling northbound on 700 West near 3800 South, apparently near a lane shift at a construction site. The woman was a passenger in the vehicle.

This tragic accident is yet another reminder that driving in area construction zones presents motorists with unique challenges which are not typically encountered on area roadways. We strongly suggest that all Salt Lake City drivers practice the utmost caution when driving in construction areas, for their safety, the safety of their passengers, and the safety of workers.

Police Believe Drowsiness a Factor in Fatal Salt Lake City Crash

Police believe that drowsiness could be a factor in a recent accident which are left a Salt Lake City man fatally injured.

According the Utah Highway Patrol, 34 year-old Abraham Majok apparently fell asleep at the wheel as he traveled westbound on I-80. His automobile struck a light pole, causing a serious injury to Majok’s head. The accident went unnoticed for some time before police were finally alerted. Police say that Majok was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident.

Majok’s tragic death is yet another reminder to Salt Lake City drivers to avoid driving while drowsy. Many studies have concluded that driving while drowsy could be just as dangerous as driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. If you feel yourself becoming drowsy as you drive, it is best to seek the nearest rest stop or another place where you can safely pull over.

Winter Emergencies: Sheltering in Your Vehicle

You may not plan to ever spend the night in your car, but that does not mean it can’t happen. Winter emergencies, weather, accidents, and breakdowns can leave you stranded, and depending on where you are and what kind of emergency you are involved in, you could wind up spending the night in your vehicle, in very cold weather. Following a few basic safety tips can keep you alive and as comfortable as possible until help arrives.

Avoid Carbon Monoxide Poisoning

One of the biggest mistakes people make when they are stranded in cold weather is poisoning themselves with carbon monoxide by running the vehicle to keep warm. You can run the engine for short periods of time. Check the exhaust for damage and make sure the tailpipe isn’t blocked with snow first. Keep a window cracked while you run the vehicle, and only run it for ten minutes and hour or five minutes every half hour.

Do not go to sleep with the engine running. That is how people die. Consider including a carbon monoxide detector sticker in your survival kit.

Survival Kit

Keep a winter survival kit in your vehicle at all times, and keep your gas tank full. Your survival kit should include items such as water, food, hand warmers, blankets, and a folding shovel.
